On wednesday, 22-year-old Darrien Hunt was shot and killed by police in Saratoga Springs, UT. (I lived in the neighboring town before moving away for college, and I went to High School in Saratoga Springs)
A witness sent Hunt’s mother, Susan Hunt, a photo of police talking to Darrien just before shots were fired. In the picture, police officers are standing on either side of Darrien, and the sword is not visible. The family believes, based on the limited information they’ve been given, that at some point during the confrontation, a shot was fired by police. Susan Hunt doesn’t know if that shot hit her son or not, but she suspects that he then ran toward the Panda Express, where multiple shots were fired and he was killed while running away.
On Saturday, after three days of silence, police claimed that he rushed them with the 3-foot (rounded edged, toy) samurai sword, prompting them to open fire.
Well an autopsy performed at the family’s request reveals that he was shot numerous times, all from the rear.
His mother is quoted saying, “I’ve been begging police, why from the time I saw the pictures of you just standing by him with his hands to his side, does he end up seconds later with a bullet in him? And then if he’s running (according to eyewitnesses), why you had to put in more bullets, and I don’t even know how many. That’s what I want to know. No white boy with a little sword would they shoot while he’s running away.”
Black Lives Matter.
